Yarn Recommendations

I used a variety of 100% acrylic Double Knit yarn for my Derps - no specific brand I just mixed and matched

These guys would work up well with any fibre Double Knit yarn - or even a different weight if you'd like a more chunky / tiny version!

Yardage

All amounts are approximate, for a finished project made with Weight 3 (Double Knit) yarn and a 2.75mm

Main Colour - 10g - 28m - 30yds

Mouth Colour - Scraps

 Other Info

  • Derptopus bodies are crocheted in the round - the tentacles first in the round then along chains
  • The pattern is written in US terms - you can find a conversion table to UK terms HERE
  • The number at the end of each row is the amount of stitches you should now have

Feel free to sell any items you make from this pattern! I would appreciate a credit to either Wonky World Creations or Sarah Hearn as the pattern author. Many thanks :)

Tentacles

2.75mm Hook
In Main Colour

1 - Ch 2, Sc 8 into 2nd Ch from hook, or Magic Ring 8 (8 Sc)

2 - Ch 14

3 - Sc 2 into 2nd Ch from hook, and 2 HDc in each Ch back across to the beginning Ch. SlSt into the next Sc in circle

4 - 10 - Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 until you have created 8 Tentacles. SlSt to beginning St to close

*Bind Off, Leaving a long tail to sew to Body/Head piece later*

Mouth

2.75mm Hook
In Mouth Colour

1 - Ch 2, Sc 6 into 2nd Ch from hook, or Magic Ring 6 (6 Sc)

2 - *Sc 2, Inc* around (8 Sc)

3 - SlSt around (8 SlSt)

*Bind Off, Leaving a long tail to sew to the Head/Body*

Assembly

Sew Tentacle piece to the bottom of the Head/Body, using the long tail. I find it stays more secure if you sew right around the very edge of the piece, securing each Tentacle individually to the Head/Body - then adding a few stitches to the middle area

Take Mouth piece and sew to the middle/front of the Head/Body, using the long tail. I like to sew mine on a little higher up, so they look like they're singing!

If using Button Eyes - sew eyes to the front of the face, to either side of the Mouth. First sew on the larger black coat/clown button, then without fastening off - using the same length of thread - sew on the white button, then the smaller black button on the very top

*You're Done!*

I hope you enjoyed making your Derptopus!
